The Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is the state bird of New Mexico and a desert favorite throughout the southwest. Roadrunners are not strong flyers, but have been clocked running at speeds of up to 20 mph. They are one of the few animals known to hunt and eat rattlesnakes.
